BOOK RECOMMENDATION – WOMANCODE

Today I want to share the book Womancode with you. It’s already been a while since I read it, but it has been on my list to write a little recommendation about it for you, because I loved that book!

What’s it about?

The book Womancode* written by Alisa Vitti is a book all about the woman cycle and how to best support your own health and hormones during the different phases of your cycle. I have learned so incredibly much about the woman cycle, and my own cycle, through this book which I had no knowledge about prior to reading it.

My knowledge about the woman cycle before reading this book was mainly that you had your menstruation once a month, and that I was aware of ovulation also happened. But besides that, I had no knowledge at all, neither did I really know how we could live our lives more in alignment with our cycles and thereby improve our health, hormones and overall wellbeing.

I have now learned that we have 4 different phases which we go through throughout our cycle:

  • Follicular phase
  • Ovulatory phase
  • Luteal phase
  • Menstrual phase

I have also learned how to better stabilise my hormones during the different phases in the form of what to focus on (relaxing, organising, exercising etc.) and what kind of food to eat. Fx to eat more healthy fat during the menstrual phase, such as avocados, chia seeds and flax seeds etc.

“The path is this: align with your hormones, allow your body to restore its own balance, and watch your symptoms clear up” – Womancode

The book actually contain meal plans which you can follow for the different phases, however I’m not much for following plans strictly, so I’ll probably never do that, but I have started to pay more attention to what to eat more of during the different phases, and learned the importance of keeping a stable blood sugar level by eating regularly.

I read this book at the same time as I was quitting my birth control pills (and I also did some other research as well), but I personally haven’t experienced any problems with getting my menstruation back (so far) after having quit the birth control – which I’m truly grateful for!

I can for sure recommend this book, especially if you are quitting the birth control pill and want to stabilise your hormones and get your cycle back on track, but also just if you want to learn more about the female body and how it functions.

Tip!

I can definitely also recommend using the app MyFLO which is created by the author behind this book. Through this app you can see which phase you are in and it gives you tips on what to focus on during the different phases every time you enter the app, which I really love!

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE TIPS

It’s January and a new year, and there’s no better time to start getting into lots of healthy habits to live your best life! I fully agree that we are all different, and that it might not be in your interest to get into healthy habits, I completely respect that. But, I do want to say that if you want to feel better, look better, feel more energised and productive and hopefully also feel much better once you get older – then these are some of the tips that might help you achieve all of that!

Here you go, some healthy lifestyle tips:

Get enough sleep

Preferably 7-8 hours each night, and the best is to get to bed before 10pm. Turn of the television and electronics at least 1 hour before going to bed since the electric blue light disturbs your body and makes it harder for you to fall asleep. Read a book, or have a good talk with a loved one instead.

Eat alkaline food

Eat plenty of vegetables and beans! Especially the green vegetables (broccoli, spinach, kale etc.).

Highly alkaline food:
– green vegetables
– green salad and seaweed
– potatoes
– sprouts, nuts and seeds
– sesame- and flax seeds
– almonds and brazil nuts
– pumpkin seeds and coconut
– garlig, turmeric and ginger
– avocado
– herbal teas, green and white tea
– olive-, coconut- and flaxseeds oil

Avoid acidic food

Meat, sugar, candy, sodas. If your body gets too much acidic food it creates an unhealthy and inflamed environment in your body where sickness, pain and overweight can grow.

Very acidic food:
– meat
– eggs
– sugar and honey
– artificial sweeteners
– vinegar
– dairy products – especially cheese
– industrial processed food
– junkfood
– margarine
– frying oil
– candy and cakes
– alcohol
– black tea and ordinary coffee
– sodas
– fruitjuice
– energy and sportsdrinks

Drink lemon water

When you wake up in the morning drink some hot water with the juice from half a lemon. This helps the digestion and it detoxes the body. After drinking this wait at least 1/2 hour before eating breakfast.

Drink lots of water during the day, but not while you are eating

Drink 2 litres of water or more during the day, but not while you are eating since this disturbs the digestion process and the absorption of the nutrients from the food.

Chew your food thoroughly and eat slowly

Chew your food until it becomes liquid before you swallow it. If you don’t chew the food enough, acid will be created in the body.

Exercise – move your body

Move your body, get your pulse up and sweat out all the toxins from your body. Moving, fx through yoga, also massages your organs and makes your body function better and creates more blood flow and improves digestion. It also releases endorphins which is a “happy hormone”, which makes you feel happier.

Drink herbal tea

Switch the coffee out with some herbal tea (fx green tea).

Mental health

Think happy and nice thoughts about yourself. Start to really love yourself and your body just as it is right now. Think that you want to take good care of your body by filling it with lots of healthy food, so it will be fresh and healthy all your life. Look yourself in the mirror each day and tell yourself that you love you <3

Do things that you love

Read, relax, go for a walk in nature, dance, talk, go to a spa a sauna – do things that makes you happy and spend your time with people who makes you feel good and who you love.

Take care of your body

Use natural products, and smear your body into oils. Drybrush your skin. Give yourself a nice oil massage on the body, in the face and your scalp Take a nice bath, scrub your skin. Just relax.

These were some of my favourite health tips for taking good care of oneself and ones body. I do want to notice that it’s all about balance. There’s no health in restricting yourself to only eat vegetables all the time, listen to your body and treat yourself once in a while as well, that is also healthy for your soul.
Please share some of your favourite health tips as well!

UPDATE ON QUITTING BIRTH CONTROL

I have promised several of you on Instagram an update on how everything is going with me quitting the birth control pill (I’m also having some lovely conversations with others doing the same thing, it’s so nice to be in the same situation and have someone to share it with).

So, it’s time for a little update on how everything has been going so far. And I’m well aware that it’s only been a short amount of time and that things can change quickly, but then I’ll of course update upon this if that happens.

The last day I took the pill was on November 14th 2017, and as usually my menstruation came a few days after, but that was just as anticipated because that would also have happened if I continued to take the pill. So I wasn’t really that nervous about the first menstruation. The one I had been a bit nervous about was the first “natural” menstruation. I have heard several stories where people go 1-3 years without getting their menstruation. And I certainly didn’t want that, because I view having my menstruation regularly as a clear sign of having a healthy functioning body, and that is what I want to have.

But no need to be nervous, my first natural menstruation came only 1-2 days “behind schedule” (according to my menstruation apps). I had a little bit of headache on the first day, but not as bad as it has been for the many past menstruations (crossing my fingers that this will only improve).

Have I experienced any symptoms?

I got my menstruation at the right time, and I still haven’t had cramps or anything. I’ve gotten a few more blemishes in places where I don’t usually get it, but not that many. So I cross my fingers that it won’t get worse, and I do my best to make my body function as well as possible, and I believe that over time this will improve my skin as well.

But one of the best things is that I can completely feel it on my mood! I feel so much happier and healthier now that I’m not filling my body with disturbing hormones. I want to listen to music and dance around, and I just feel so much better than I have done in a long time.

What I am doing to stabilise my hormones

Vitex supplement
As already mentioned I’ve been taking a supplement called vitex which is supposed to help you stabilise your hormones.

Maca powder
I’ve also been putting 1 tsp of maca powder in my oatmeal every morning, this also helps to stabilise hormones.

Relaxing
I’ve learned a lot through reading the book womancode* and from an online workshop with Carolina, and one of the most important things when it comes to stabilising your hormones is simply learning to just relax. Don’t stress too much, take it easy and just relax. So, I’ve been drinking lots of tea, tried not to have too many things scheduled in my calendar and I’ve also just been laying on the couch and been relaxing completely.

Eating vegetables!
One of the best things you can do for your body to make it function as well as possible is to give it a lot of fibre! Eat a lot of vegetables, in a variety of colours (but especially those dark green ones such as kale, broccoli and spinach!). So I’ve tried to do some more meal prepping and made sure to eat plenty of vegetables. This is also one of the best things you can do for your skin!

So, what do I use for protection now?

You might wonder, “well, if you quit birth control and you are still in a relationship, then what do you use for protection for not becoming pregnant?“, Quiet simple and very old fashioned, condoms. I’ve also invested in a Lady-Comp machine (another blogpost about that another time), but it takes a little while before the computer really “knows you”, and therefore it will take a while before it says that it is safe to have sex without condoms. I should also mention that this machine is of course not protecting against unwanted sexual diseases and is therefore only recommended to use if you are in a committed relationship. If you are not, then condoms is of course the best way to protect against these kind of diseases.

I’ve also started to really try to learn more about my overall cycle through reading the book Womancode and through the apps Clue and MyFLO. I find it extremely interesting to try to live more in alignment with my own cycle, so I’m all about learning more about that and myself at the moment.

Questions for you: I would love to know if you’ve ditched the birth control pill as well? Or perhaps you’ve never been on it? Or if you are considering it? What have your experience with it been? Let’s talk about it!

MY FAVOURITE HEALTH BOOKS

I was asked the other day if I wanted to share some of my favourite health books, and of course I want do! Health is one of my biggest passions in life. I LOVE to read about it, watch documentaries about it etc. and learn new information. I’ve read several books about this subject, but these are some of my absolutely favourite ones. There are books about hormones, what food to eat to make your skin look beautiful, what food is good for improving digestion, natural contraception methods, yoga and ayurveda, herbs and just learning more about what food to eat, and what food to eat less of, if you want to have a healthy body.

1. Womancode – Alisa Vitti*
I read this book recently, and I love it. I feel like I’ve learned SO much about women’s cycles in it, and how to stabilise hormones and avoid hormonal imbalance. Definitely a must-read for women, especially if you are just getting off the birth control pill and want to stabilise your hormones back to normal again.

2. Beauty foods – Sally Walker & Laura Bonné*
I love to read about what specific foods does for our body, our health and how we look. This book goes into depth with different food which is amazing to eat for our health and how we look.

3. Hormonel harmoni – Caroline Fibæk & Stine Fürst*
If you want to learn more about stabilising your hormones, or finding out what kind of hormonal imbalances you might have, then this book is great. It also has a little test where you can identify where you might have a hormonal imbalance.

4. Taking charge of your fertility – Toni Weschler*
When I first started thinking about quitting the birth control pill, I lend this book from my friend, and wow. This was when I started to learn about more natural ways of protecting yourself from getting pregnant, and just in general learn more about the female body and the cycle.

5. Et Pukka Liv – Sebastian Pole*
The founder behind the Pukka tea brand wrote this lovely book (A Pukka Life) about health, ayurveda, herbs and their benefits.

6. Food Pharmacy – Mia Clase & Lina Aurell*
A lovely book about what food to eat if you really want to be healthy, you’ll learn a lot more about probiotics, vegetables and much more.

7. Begynderyogabogen – Karen Pallisgaard*
If you are new to yoga, or want to learn about ayurveda, then this book is amazing. So easy to read, and yet filled with so much good information. I’m such a fan of Karen’s books, also Langsom Livsstil.

8. Medical Medium Life-Changing Foods – Anthony Williams*
This book is also about how food can change your life and make you healthy. It describes different food and how it affects your body and your health.

9. How Not to Die – Michael Greger*
If you’re interested in a plant based diet, this is probably one of the books most people will recommend you to read. Michael Greger is one of the ‘big nutritionists’ in the plant based field and have written this amazing book. The book comes with so much scientific evidence for how only a diet can prevent and reverse many of the causes of diseases-related death. Another one is The China Study by T. Collin Campbell & Thomas M. Campell, which is about a study made in China which showed how diet affected health.

I hope you can find some inspiration, and please also share your favourite health books with me – I’m constantly on the hunt for new amazing books to read!

TEA TIME – ALL TIME FAVOURITE

I thought I would share another ‘tea time’ with you, where I share good teas. But, today it’s about my all-time favourite tea, and it’s the tea I’ve been drinking almost every day (several times a day) throughout the last 3-4 years. And that is Pickwick’s green tea with lemon. I learned many years ago that green tea was just amazingly healthy and good for you, and that it contained lots of antioxidants (and antioxidants are super good for you, because they protect your body from bad things. There are also a lot of antioxidants in berries for example). When I learned this, I had to try it out. First I just bought some plain green tea, which was to be honest really boring. But then I discovered the green tea with lemon from Pickwick. It still tasted healthy, but not boring and ‘too healthy’, and it quickly became my favourite, and, as mentioned, I’ve been drinking this almost every day throughout the last couple of years.

Benefits of drinking green tea
– the antioxidants in green tea can help prevent you from getting cancer
– it increases fat burning, and can therefore be especially good for people who want to lose weight
– it may protect your brain, and lower the risk of getting alzheimer’s
– and much, much more
